Job Summary

The Director, Global Tax Operations is a key internal leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, governance, and execution of Avient Corporation’s global tax accounting and compliance.  Reporting to the Vice President of Tax, this role ensures the integrity of tax-related financial reporting, leads the global tax provision, including valuation allowance, uncertain tax positions, and other tax accounting positions, as well as overseeing internal controls.

 

Essential Functions

1. Tax Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Lead the global tax provision process under ASC 740, including current and deferred tax calculations, in coordination with both internal resources and external providers.

• Accountable for final review and approval of financial statement disclosures.

• Make final determinations on valuation allowances (VA), uncertain tax positions (UTP), APB 23 assertions, and other key tax accounting judgments.

• Lead monthly forecasting of the Annual Effective Tax Rate (AETR) and calculation of the quarterly effective tax rate (QTR) to support financial planning and analysis.

• Oversee monthly forecasting of global cash taxes and ensure accurate calculation of monthly cash tax obligations in coordination with Treasury and FP&A.

• Maintain and enhance internal controls over tax reporting in compliance with SOX and internal audit standards.

2. Compliance Oversight & Governance

• Oversee the global tax compliance calendar and deliverables, ensuring timely and accurate filings across jurisdictions.

• Provide final review and sign-off on U.S. federal, state, and international income tax returns prepared by third-party providers.

• Oversee indirect tax functions (sales / use, Canadian indirect tax, property tax) and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

• Develop and maintain a robust tax governance framework, including documentation, risk assessments, and escalation protocols.

3. Vendor Management & Operational Excellence

• Serve as the primary liaison with external tax service providers, ensuring quality, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness of outsourced work.

• Drive process standardization and automation across global tax operations, leveraging tax technology platforms and ERP systems, such as SAP.

4. Audit & Risk Management

• Lead all tax-related interactions with external auditors, including provision reviews and audit support over both the U.S. GAAP provision and other US audits.

• Manage responses to tax authority audits and notices in collaboration with the Tax Planning & Controversy Leader.

• Monitor global tax law changes and accounting standards, assessing their impact and ensuring timely implementation.

5. Leadership & Collaboration

• Serve as a strategic advisor to Finance, Treasury, Legal, and Business Units on complex tax matters, providing insight and guidance that influence key business decisions.

• Engage with leadership, including executive C-Suite stakeholders, to influence outcomes, communicate complex tax strategies clearly, and build trusted relationships at the highest levels of the organization.

• Collaborate closely with the Vice President of Tax and the Tax Planning team to develop and execute forward-looking tax strategies that align with corporate objectives and drive long-term value.

• Represent Avient in cross-functional initiatives and enterprise-wide tax-related projects, ensuring alignment with broader business goals.

• Mentor and develop internal tax staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and knowledge retention.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA required with active license (MST or JD being beneficial).

• 15+ years of progressive experience in corporate tax environment of Big 4 public accounting firm and/or publicly traded multinational company with a strong focus on tax accounting and compliance.

• 5+ years of direct leadership experience including managing / developing a global team.

• Deep expertise in ASC 740, U.S. GAAP, and international tax principles.

• Proven experience and success managing third-party tax providers and leading global tax operations.

• Proven experience and success building trusted relationships, communicating, and influencing outcomes up through executive C-Suite leadership levels.

• Exceptional leadership, analytical, and communication skills.

• Experience with tax technology platforms (e.g., OneSource Tax Provision) required.
